For EACH of the 9 chapters of The Great Gatsby, you are to write a response journal. This is in addition to any other assigned work I provide you with, and will be due by 1o:00pm the day after we finish a chapter. So, if we finish chapter 1 on Monday, than by Tuesday @10pm, the journal must be completed and submitted.
Journals will be submitted as comments on my Blog (such that they are public.)

Your journals must all include the following components:
- Your NAME
- A 4-5 sentence summary of the chapter in your own words.
- Find 3-5 words in the chapter that you did not know when reading. For each: Look them up in a dictionary, make sure you understand them, then use the word in a new sentence of your own.
- In each chapter, you must choose a different character to focus on - (if you choose Nick in Ch. 1, you may never choose him again). For this character:
a) Name the character
b) Choose a quote that you think best represents the character
c) Describe his/her best and worst qualities as demonstrated in this chapter
d) In a paragraph, explain what you think this character wants/needs most and whether you think he/she is getting it, giving justification. - From each chapter, select a meaningful quote, then describe its significance in the novel. These must be YOUR selection (not something from sparknotes/bookrags/etc.
- Each chapter note at least two sightings of one or more of the novels's major symbols: the color green, the color white, silver and gold, the ash heap, the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleberg, Dan Cody, East vs. West Egg, Rain in Ch. 5, Heat in Ch. 7, Wolfsheim's cufflinks, faded timetable (showing names of Gatsby's guests), or identify another symbol you see. For the symbol:
a) give a page number in which you find it
b) take a guess at what you think it represents and its significance in the novel.
